Police Memorial and 'Welcome to Woodburn' monument sign will be located at new Transit Facility

The groundbreaking for the Interchange and Transit Facility Project is scheduled for July 29 and I anticipate many of you are planning to attend. This is major milestone for our community and will be instrumental in our future economic vitality and identity.

The extension of Evergreen Road north of Highway 214 and the new Transit Facility are currently scheduled to be completed in late October or early November. Upon substantial completion of this phase of work, the City will be able to relocate the “Welcome to Woodburn” monument sign within the Transit Facility in a position greeting motorists to our community.

Joining the “Welcome to Woodburn” sign will be a very meaningful memorial to the police officers killed and injured in the Dec. 12, 2008 bombing at the West Coast Bank. The memorial that currently resides in front of the existing Columbia State Bank (formerly West Coast Bank) at the corner of Oregon Way and Highway 214 will be relocated to the Transit Facility in a prominent location adjacent to the “Welcome to Woodburn” sign.

The need for finding a new location for the memorial is because the widening of Highway 214 and the intersection improvements at Oregon Way will be constructed over the current location of the Police Memorial. The road improvements also are requiring Columbia State Bank to relocate.

Columbia State Bank has graciously offered to relocate the Police Memorial to their new site, which will be north of the Transit Facility on Evergreen Road. However, after discussing various options with the families of the bombing victims, it was agreed that relocation of the Police Memorial to a prominent location directly visible from Highway 214 and on public property was a more meaningful location for tribute to the victims of the bombing.

The construction schedule permits the City to directly move the Police Memorial from its current site to its new home along the “Gateway to Woodburn” at the new Transit Facility. The Police Memorial will not have to be placed in storage awaiting completion of construction and will join the “Welcome to Woodburn” sign announcing this is our community. The tragic events of Dec. 12, 2008 will forever be part of our community.
