Legion Park
Legion Park is Woodburn's oldest park site. At nearly 16 acres, Legion Park has a full sized soccer field, stadium, picnic pavilion, numerous picnic tables, grass playfields, and densely wooded Douglas Fir tree grove. An archeologically themed nature play area was installed in May 2013.
Archeological Discoveries
Along the banks of Mill Creek at the western edge of Legion Park, there have been many archeological discoveries over the years. Many of these discoveries are summarized by the Willamette Valley Pleistocene Project's website. The most recent dig occurred in July 2014. The results of that exploration are documented in the Field Work Summary.
In the December 2002 video below, archeologist Alison Stenger gives a presentation on the many findings in the Woodburn area.
Legion Park Improvement Project
The City was awarded a $278,000 grant by the State of Oregon's Parks and Recreation Department to make improvements to Legion Park. The grant comes through the Local Government Grant program, which is funded by Oregon Lottery proceeds. The project made a variety of improvements to the Park, including replacement of the existing restrooms and picnic pavilion facilities. The project also involved improvements to landscaping and turf, selective tree thinning, an irrigation system in the vicinity of the new pavilion, asphalt pathways, benches & picnic tables, and the removal of the RV style electrical boxes and deteriorated fencing around the soccer field. The concept plan for the project can be viewed here.
