Union Pacific Increases Track Speed in Woodburn as of 03/15/20

Railroad Tracks

Effective March 15, 2020, Union Pacific will begin to increase the maximum track speed limit from 45 to 60 mph for freight trains and 70 mph for passenger trains on the rail line running parallel to Front St.

Per Union Pacific: Faster train speeds typically help reduce motorist wait times at crossings, and help Union Pacific more efficiently deliver goods to customers. Improved and additional rail capacity benefits everyone. It allows freight rail service to grow, helping to build a cleaner environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, freight trains are nearly four times more fuel efficient than trucks.

We encourage the community to call our Response Management Communications Center (RMCC) at 1-888-877-7267 to report and concerns regarding rail operations.

Safety Tips

With the increase in speeds, the City is reminding everyone to practice safe behavior around all railroad tracks and crossings.

Helpful tips from Operation Lifesaver:

  • Freight trains don't travel at fixed times, and schedules for passenger trains often change. Always expect a train at each highway-rail intersection at any time.
  • Remember to cross train tracks ONLY at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings, and obey all warning signs and signals posted there.
  • Stay alert around railroad tracks. Refrain from texting, headphones or other distractions that would prevent you from hearing an approaching train; never mix rails and recreation.
