In Memoriam
Captain Thomas P. Tennant was killed in the line of duty on December 12, 2008 when a bomb detonated at a local Woodburn bank during an extortion attempt. Captain Tennant was 51 years old at the time of his death and had served WPD for 28 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.
In 2009, a memorial was unveiled on Highway 214 in Woodburn in honor of the sacrifice and service of three Police Officers involved in the incident. Oregon State Police bomb technician Senior Trooper William Hakim also was killed in the line of duty, and then-Police Chief Scott Russell was seriously injured in the blast. This Memorial, designed and built by Woodburn Resident Don Sprague, is a permanent structure reminding everyone of the sacrifice of these officers in keeping the citizens of Woodburn safe. Today, due to road improvements, the memorial is located at 2900 Tom Tennant Drive and can be viewed while driving on Highway 214.
