Traffic Safety Unit
The Woodburn Police Department Motor Unit is a highly visible, safe, and efficient resource utilized to enforce traffic regulations. The Motor Unit is staffed by two officers deployed on motorcycles after receiving highly specialized motorcycle and traffic investigation/enforcement training. They serve many functions to include:
- Traffic enforcement
- Patrol duties
- Parades guides
- And more
Primary benefits to motorcycles are their high maneuverability and acceleration rates in congested areas, allowing them to access areas patrol cars cannot and respond to incidents much faster with less impacts on traffic. The goal of the Motor Unit is to provide education and enforcement in the community in order to increase safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians, while striving to decrease traffic violations, crashes, injuries and death.
Along with our Motor Unit, our department has two radar “speed reader” trailers that can be used almost anywhere in the city to warn drivers of their actual speed as compared to the posted speed. These “speed readers” are also used for traffic management data collection. Woodburn also utilizes photo red light enforcement at strategic locations to reduce traffic crashes related to red light violations.
